It's Fine Press Friday!

Red Wise, a Thousand and One Nights-like fable modelled after the life of the classical Arabic poet Abu Nowas, was written by English translator and poet Edward Powys Mathers (1892–1939) and was printed and published by his friend, the Irish printer and wood engraver Robert Gibbings (1889-1958) in 1926 two years after Gibbings acquired the Golden Cockerel Press. It was printed on handmade paper with Gibbings's own engravings in an edition of 500 copies. Mather was delighted with the production and wrote to Gibbings's wife Moira:

You have turned Red Wise into a really superb book; I can't tell you how pleased I am with it. And, . . . one or two people have managed to like the content already. . . .

Indeed, it was well reviewed by several publications, including the Times Literary Supplement, Bookman's Journal, and the New Statesman. The London Mercury thought otherwise, however:

Red Wise reminded me of a Beardsley hag rigged out as a fairy godmother. It is a well-done book, of slight indecency almost hidden beneath the decoration; but the mere ingenuity of the disguise shows the author has spent more time on it than is either healthy or profitable.

We haven't read the text, but we do like the wood engravings and the overall production. And it also has nice endpapers with glittery gold ink!

Interviewer: "Well, George, that wasn't the smoothest Friday we've ever seen [laughs] in F1, but encouraging pace from you, nonetheless. How happy are you with your Friday?" George: "It was a pretty positive Friday, I must say. Obviously in FP1 a lot of young drivers in the car, so difficult to gauge where the pace of the car was at. FP2, very interrupted, but I felt happy, I felt good out there. The long run pace seems good, which is gonna be the most important. I think it's gonna be close out there with the likes of Lando and maybe Charles. We always know obviously Red Bull have got a little bit more in their pocket, so I'm excited going into tomorrow." Interviewer: "Now, can I just ask you, you made interesting comments in FP1 about what I assumed was a test item on the car, saying that you were having to turn a bit more at low speed? Can we know anything more about that, or is that a 2024 development?" George: "Big secrets. Big secrets. No, no, no. No, we're just trying to feel little bits and bobs on the car that we've tried over a number of races. It was just having a slightly different effect here in Abu Dhabi than we had at previous races, so just feeding back to the team, but all good." Interviewer: "Thank you." George: "Thank you."

عن أبي سعيد الخدري، قال: خَطَبَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَقَالَ ‏"‏ إِنَّ اللَّهَ خَيَّرَ عَبْدًا بَيْنَ الدُّنْيَا وَبَيْنَ مَا عِنْدَهُ، فَاخْتَارَ مَا عِنْدَ اللَّهِ ‏"‏‏.‏ فَبَكَى أَبُو بَكْرٍ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ فَقُلْتُ فِي نَفْسِي مَا يُبْكِي هَذَا الشَّيْخَ إِنْ يَكُنِ اللَّهُ خَيَّرَ عَبْدًا بَيْنَ الدُّنْيَا وَبَيْنَ مَا عِنْدَهُ فَاخْتَارَ مَا عِنْدَ اللَّهِ، فَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم هُوَ الْعَبْدَ، وَكَانَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ أَعْلَمَنَا‏.‏ قَالَ ‏"‏ يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ لاَ تَبْكِ، إِنَّ أَمَنَّ النَّاسِ عَلَىَّ فِي صُحْبَتِهِ وَمَالِهِ أَبُو بَكْرٍ، وَلَوْ كُنْتُ مُتَّخِذًا خَلِيلاً مِنْ أُمَّتِي لاَتَّخَذْتُ أَبَا بَكْرٍ، وَلَكِنْ أُخُوَّةُ الإِسْلاَمِ وَمَوَدَّتُهُ، لاَ يَبْقَيَنَّ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ باب إِلاَّ سُدَّ إِلاَّ باب أَبِي بَكْرٍ ‏"‏‏.‏ صحيح البخاري ومسلم حديث ٤٦٦ - ٢٣٨٢

Narrated Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri: The Prophet (peace be upon him) delivered a sermon and said, "Allah gave a choice to one of (His) slaves either to choose this world or what is with Him in the Hereafter. He chose the latter." Abu Bakr wept. I said to myself, "Why is this Sheikh weeping, if Allah gave choice to one (of His) slaves either to choose this world or what is with Him in the Here after and he chose the latter?" And that slave was Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) himself. Abu Bakr knew more than us. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "O Abu Bakr! Don't weep. The Prophet (peace be upon him) added: Abu- Bakr has favored me much with his property and company. If I were to take a Khalil from mankind I would certainly have taken Abu Bakr but the Islamic brotherhood and friendship is sufficient. Close all the gates in the mosque except that of Abu Bakr." كان أبو بَكرٍ رَضيَ اللهُ عنه أقرَبَ النَّاسِ إلى النَّبيِّ صلَّى اللهُ عليه وسلَّمَ؛ فهو رَفيقُه في هِجرَتِه، وهو أعظَمُ هذه الأُمَّةِ إيمانًا وتَصْديقًا، بحيث لو وُزِنَ إيمانُه بإيمانِ النَّاسِ كلِّهم، لرجَحَ إيمانُه بإيمانِهم. وفي هذا الحَديثِ يُخبِرُ أبو سَعيدٍ الخُدْريُّ رَضيَ اللهُ عنه أنَّ رَسولَ اللهِ صلَّى اللهُ عليه وسلَّمَ جلَسَ على المِنبَرِ في مرَضِه الأخيرِ الَّذي مات فيه، وذلك في العامِ الحادي عشر مِن الهِجْرةِ بالمَدينةِ المُنوَّرةِ، فقال: «إنَّ عَبدًا خَيَّره اللهُ بيْن أنْ يُؤْتيَه مِن زَهرةِ الدُّنْيا ما شاء»، والمَعنى: يُعْطيه مِقْدارَ ما أرادَ مِن طُولِ العُمرِ والبَقاءِ في الدُّنْيا، والتَّمتُّعِ بها، وزَهرةُ الدُّنيا: نَعِيمُها وزِينَتُها، «وبيْن ما عِندَه، فاخْتارَ ما عندَه»، أي: اختارَ وفضَّلَ ما عندَ اللهِ سُبحانَه، ممَّا أعدَّ له مِن أنْواعِ النَّعيمِ المُقيمِ، ولذَّةِ اللِّقاءِ، والنَّظَرِ إلى وَجْهِه الكَريمِ، فلمَّا سَمِع أبو بَكرٍ رَضيَ اللهُ عنه ذلك القَولَ مِن النَّبيِّ صلَّى اللهُ عليه وسلَّمَ بَكى، وقال: فدَيْناكَ بآبائِنا وأُمَّهاتِنا! فتَعجَّبَ الحاضِرونَ مِن قَولِ أبي بَكرٍ رَضيَ اللهُ عنه وبُكائِه؛ إذ لم يَفْهَموا مِن كَلامِ النَّبيِّ صلَّى اللهُ عليه وسلَّمَ ما يَستَدْعي ذلك البُكاءَ والقَولَ مِن أبي بَكرٍ رَضيَ اللهُ عنه، ولكنَّ الصِّدِّيقَ رَضيَ اللهُ عنه قدْ فهِمَ مِن هذا الكَلامِ مُفارَقَتَه صلَّى اللهُ عليه وسلَّمَ الدُّنْيا، وأنَّ العَبدَ المُخيَّرَ هو رَسولُ اللهِ صلَّى اللهُ عليه وسلَّمَ، فبَكى لذلك، وقال ما قال. فلمَّا مات النَّبيُّ صلَّى اللهُ عليه وسلَّمَ، فهِمَ النَّاسُ مَقصِدَه صلَّى اللهُ عليه وسلَّمَ مِن كَلامِه؛ ولذلك قال أبو سَعيدٍ الخُدْريُّ رَضيَ اللهُ عنه: «فكان رَسولُ اللهِ صلَّى اللهُ عليه وسلَّمَ هو المُخيَّرَ»، أي: هو الَّذي خَيَّره اللهُ بيْن نَعيمِ الدُّنْيا وبيْن لِقائِه، وكان أبو بَكرٍ رَضيَ اللهُ عنه أعلَمَ النَّاسِ بالنَّبيِّ صلَّى اللهُ عليه وسلَّمَ. وقد قال صلَّى اللهُ عليه وسلَّمَ في حقِّ أبي بَكرٍ رَضيَ اللهُ عنه: «إنَّ مِن أمَنِّ النَّاسِ عَلَيَّ في صُحبَتِه ومالِه أبا بَكْرٍ»، ومَعْناه: أنَّه أكثَرُهم جُودًا وسَماحةً لنا بنفْسِه ومالِه، وليس هو مِن المَنِّ الَّذي هو الاعْتِدادُ بالصَّنيعةِ؛ لأنَّه أذًى مُبطِلٌ للثَّوابِ، ولأنَّ المِنَّةَ للهِ ولرَسولِه صلَّى اللهُ عليه وسلَّمَ في قَبولِ ذلك، وفي غيرِه. وقال: «ولو كُنتُ مُتَّخِذًا خَليلًا مِن أُمَّتي لَاتَّخَذْتُ أبا بَكرٍ، إلَّا خُلَّةَ الإسْلامِ»، والمَعنى: لو كُنتُ مُتَّخِذًا صَديقًا أنقَطِعُ إليه، وأُفرِّغُ قَلْبي لمَودَّتِه، لاتَّخَذْتُ أبا بَكرٍ. وقيلَ: أصْلُ الخُلَّةِ: الافْتِقارُ والانْقِطاعُ، فخَليلُ اللهِ: المُنقَطِعُ إليه، وقيلَ: لأنَّه صلَّى اللهُ عليه وسلَّمَ قَصَرَ حاجَتَه على اللهِ تعالَى، وقيلَ: الخُلَّةُ: الاخْتِصاصُ، وقيلَ: الاصْطِفاءُ، والنَّبيُّ صلَّى اللهُ عليه وسلَّمَ ليس له خَليلٌ؛ لأنَّ اللهَ تعالَى قدِ اتَّخَذَه خَليلًا، وهذا لا يُنافي ما ذكَرَه الصَّحابةُ رَضيَ اللهُ عنهم مِن اتِّخاذِهم إيَّاه صلَّى اللهُ عليه وسلَّمَ خَليلًا؛ إذ لا يُشترَطُ في الخُلَّةِ أنْ تكونَ مِن الطَّرَفَينِ، ولوِ اتَّخَذَ النَّبيُّ صلَّى اللهُ عليه وسلَّمَ أحَدًا خَليلًا لَاتَّخَذَ أبا بَكرٍ رَضيَ اللهُ عنه؛ لأنَّه أهلٌ لذلك لولا المانِعُ؛ فإنَّ خُلَّةَ الرَّحمَنِ تعالَى لا تسَعُ مُخالَّةَ شَيءٍ غَيرِه أصْلًا، ولم يكُنْ بيْن النَّبيِّ صلَّى اللهُ عليه وسلَّمَ وبيْنه رَضيَ اللهُ عنه إلَّا أُخوَّةُ الإسْلامِ. وقال صلَّى اللهُ عليه وسلَّمَ: «لا يَبقَيَنَّ في المَسجِدِ خَوْخةٌ إلَّا خَوْخةُ أبي بَكرٍ»، والخَوْخةُ: البابُ الصَّغيرُ، وكان بعضُ الصَّحابةِ فَتَحوا أبْوابًا في دِيارِهم إلى المَسجِدِ، فأمَرَ النَّبيُّ صلَّى اللهُ عليه وسلَّمَ بسَدِّها كلِّها إلَّا بابَ أبي بَكرٍ رَضيَ اللهُ عنه؛ ليَتميَّزَ بذلك فَضلُه. وفي الحَديثِ: مَنقَبةٌ عَظيمةٌ لأبي بَكرٍ رَضيَ اللهُ عنه. وفيه: تَعْريضٌ بالخِلافةِ لأبي بَكرٍ بعْدَ النَّبيِّ  صلَّى اللهُ عليه وسلَّمَ. وفيه: أنَّ المَساجِدَ تُصانُ عن تَطرُّقِ النَّاسِ إليها، إلَّا لحاجةٍ مُهِمَّةٍ. وفيه: التَّرغيبُ في اختيارِ ما في الآخِرةِ على ما في الدُّنيا. وفيه: شُكرُ المحسِنِ، والتَّنويهُ بفضْلِه، والثَّناءُ عليه. الدرر السنية https://www.dorar.net/hadith/sharh/6508
